Information
Community Health Services and Health Education:
This Division provides health education services to the community via
presentations to agencies, schools, churches and other locations as
requested. Health Educators also disseminate literature and
educate participants at health fairs.
We also participate in and plan numerous health fairs at various
locations throughout the community. We offer free health
screenings for glucose, blood pressure, cholesterol and body fat
composition. Referrals are also made to the health providers as
needed. Health information and literature is disseminated at all
of our events. We also give away incentive items to the community
to promote better health. We work with other agencies that
provide information regarding their services and/or screenings such as
vision and hearing screenings and body mass index.
We coordinate the Charles A. Smith Wellness Program for the employees
of the City. Workshops on numerous topics are provided along with
the screenings and literature. This program serves to provide
education to encourage prevention and improve well being.
We also coordinate activities with the City’s HIV program, the
W.I.C. (Women, Infant and Children’s) Program and the
Environmental Health Division.

Environmental Services
This division is responsible for implementing the many public health
programs, as mandated by the State of New Jersey Department of Health,
including retail food establishment inspections, swimming pool
inspections, plan reviews for retail food establishments, public health
nuisance complaints, lead poisoning investigations, animal exposure
investigations, Tobacco Age of Sale (TASE) enforcement program
compliance inspections, Smoke Free Air Act complaint investigations,
tattoo parlor inspections, massage parlor inspections, as well as other
program activities.
We also conduct State Department of Environmental Protection mandated
activities relating to the County Environmental Health Act
(CEHA). These programs include air pollution control, safe
drinking water and water pollution control, hazardous materials, noise
control, solid waste control, and leaking underground storage tanks.
Additionally, we monitor the quality of our bathing beaches and back bays through the Cooperative Coastal Monitoring Program.

Program Activities
Recreational Bathing - Plan review and
pre-operational inspections of all swimming pools and whirlpools in the city.
Bacteriological sampling of all natural recreational bathing sites. Operational
inspections, including complaint response and accident investigations, of all
recreational bathing areas.
Food Surveillance - Plan review, pre-
operational, and operational inspections of all retail food establishments in
the city. Citizen and employee complaint response. Epiderniological
investigations associated necessitated by potential foodbome illness outbreaks.
Occupational Health - Complaint response for
all workers in the City of Atlantic City. Respond to complaints referred by
NJDOH.
Public Health Nuisance-Respond and investigate
all complaints regarding public health nuisances including social service cases
and a small amount of housing complaints. Conduct sanitary surveys as
necessary.
Body Art - Plan review, pre-operational, and
operational inspections of all establishments offering tattoos, body piercing
and permanent cosmetics.
T.A.S.E. — Tobacco Age of Sale Enforcement
Program. Utilizing youths from the community to conduct random, unannounced
investigations to determine underage tobacco sales. Partnering with Community
Health Division to provide anti tobacco health education to Atlantic City
youths.
Animal Control - Quarantine and release of
animals involved in human exposures. Specimen collection of possible rabid
animals. Conduct free anti rabies clinics annually.
Lead Poisoning - Investigation and
environmental assessment of all childhood lead poisoning cases in Atlantic
City. Responsible for oversight of remedial work conducted on dwellings
determined to be lead hazards.

Associated Program Activities
Noise: Respond to all complaints and insure
abatement of all Complaints involving excessive noise.
Air: Respond to all complaints alleging
violations of the States air Pollution regulations. Conduct inspections of dry
cleaners, gas Stations and minor "B" sources.
Water: Pollution Investigate all complaints
involving water pollution such as sewerage back ups and leaking underground
storage tanks.
HazMat: Actual response and technical support
to Fire Department at Haz Mat incidents.
Solid Waste: Respond to complaints and DEP
referrals regarding violations of State solid waste regulations.
