General Information

The Planning Division, sometimes referred to as the Land Use Division, is charged with maintaining the integrity of the City’s Land Use Ordinance which contains all zoning provisions.

This division provides staff support for two key boards, The Planning Board and the Zoning Board of Adjustment. Division staff review applications for alterations and new construction, new uses of existing facilities and requests to subdivide or consolidate existing parcels. Some decisions are made administratively while others as prescribed by law are scheduled for hearings before the appropriate board. The planning staff in addition to providing staff support, also makes recommendations to the respective boards to help guide their decision making process.

The Planning Division also prepares Requests for Proposals and Requests for Qualifications related to such thing as development of City-owned land. The staff also participates in evaluation of those proposals subsequently submitted. Periodically the Planning Division also becomes involved in the state-mandated update of its Master Plan.
