General Information

The Public Works Department's mission is:

  • to build a strong, positive, responsive, and responsible public image
  • to create and promote a safe, professional and productive work environment
  • to efficiently use financial, human and material resources

The Department of Public Works is made up of several divisions and sub divisions, responsible for a myriad of functions concerning the city's infrastructure and environmental issues. The following divisions comprise the whole of the Department:

  • The Directors Office has responsibility for plans, specifications and contracts for public improvements; supervises and administers the various divisions and subdivisions; prescribes the internal organization of the department and the functions of its staff.
  • City Engineer Division has chief administrative authority over design and supervision of the building and repair of such things as buildings, roads, bridges, tunnels, water and sewer systems and boardwalk structures.
  • Electrical Bureau Division has charge of operations involving installation and maintenance or repair of electrical services pertaining to electrical wiring in city buildings, telephone system wiring, fire alarm and traffic signals.
  • Parks and Public Property Division supervises preventive maintenance, alterations and repairs for municipal buildings and properties. This division trims, plants, cares for and preserves city parks, grounds, trees, and green areas and attends to playground and facility maintenance.
  • Facilities Subdivision provides maintenance and repair to city buildings involving carpentry, painting, and plumbing problems, and boards up abandoned/dangerous private properties.
  • Beach & Boardwalk Division plans and supervises maintenance and repair problems to the boardwalk and beach area, such as, capping of piles, repair decking and replace boardwalk sections, erect, paint, and repair pipe railings and pavilions, removes debris from beach, keeping the beach and boardwalk in a safe and clean condition.
  • Building Maintenance Division has responsibility for the cleaning and maintenance of city owned buildings and surrounding grounds (inclusive of Boardwalk comfort stations), elevators, etc; also some functions of charitable organizations come under our auspices in that we provide and maintain a facility for their use.
  • Sanitation Division provides environmental services, such as, the collection and removal of garbage and debris, street cleaning, clearing of street drains, salting and plowing of snow covered streets.
  • Streets Division handles the construction, maintenance and repair of city streets.
